Blog Ten – Exploring The Notion of the Feminine

(For women and especially for conception, pregnancy and motherhood)

What is it to be a Woman in our time? What does the Feminine actually mean? What is the definition of Feminine Power? I’ve been exploring what may be the Source of a woman’s power, the feminine spirit, which thrived in the more female oriented Goddess cultures, only to be superseded by the patriarchal way of life. I wonder how we can retain the true nature of our gender while navigating this predominantly masculine driven world – what does life look like from the Feminine point of view?

Here is an art exercise from my book – The Art of Birth – which can connect you to your Feminine spirit.

Set out a selection of your art materials.

Start this exercise by doing a relaxation process to tune into your body and release your creativity.

While you are doing the relaxation process, gently ask yourself the following questions:

• What does being a Woman mean to me?
• What does the Feminine mean to me?
• When you are ready, open your eyes and choose any art materials that you are drawn to – I would recommend paint but you are also free to choose.

Make an image for about 20 to 30 minutes (again this can be as long or short as you are able to manage depending on your time or pleasure).

When you have finished, stand back and observe your picture and see what is going on in it.

• Reflect on how it makes you feel and what response you are having to your picture.
• What emotions are present?
• What affect are the colours having on you?
• What do the different colours mean to you (what do they symbolically represent)?
• What do the shapes represent?
• What does the scene represent?

If you like, make notes in your journal.

Have a juicy Feminine week!

Warm wishes,
Alex xx
