About the Book Vagina: A New Biography (by Naomi Wolf) – Blog 28

Dear friends,

I am now back from a blissful fortnight away with friends in France. The beautiful sunshine, heat and good company – not to mention all the yummy food – was a real blessing.

While I was there, I enjoyed reading the very powerful and interesting book Vagina: A New Biography by Naomi Wolf. She weaves together an enlightening story of her personal journey with research from both scientific and alternative camps and how the vagina has been represented throughout history. She discusses the Vagina from as many perspectives as you can think of and probably more but perhaps the most important link Wolf makes, is the connection between a woman’s sexuality and her creative expression. She reveals that the vagina is not a separate, disconnected body part with a life of its own but how it is an integral part of our entire life energy system.

Wolf explains, how through scientific research, it has been proven (something which is common sense in my opinion but nevertheless science likes to ‘prove’ theories) that if you treat a women with love and respect, like the Feminine Goddess she is – and this includes the vagina and all its components – you will have a happy fulfilled woman. Similarly, if we continue objectifying and degrading women and their sexuality then we will foster dissatisfied, angry and disillusioned women.

However, women can also learn to love and respect their own selves and sexuality. It is important for us to honour the Feminine Goddesses that we are and not hand over our power to others and let our culture define us. She calls for the return of the sacred vagina and what it means to be a woman in this time.

Essential reading I’d say!

Have a great week.

Warm wishes,
Alex xx
